Mr. Richard Dieter, Executive Director of the Death Penalty Information Center, will lead a discussion of capital punishment in the United States and discuss how American death penalty practice fits into the larger context of capital punishment around the world. Questions to be answered include, why is America the only western, industrialized nation in the world with the death penalty?

Dustin Lance Black (Academy Award winner for MILK) brings the trial of California's Proposition 8 to life in his documentary play based on the actual transcripts of the Federal District Court trial which challenged the voter approved proposition that sought to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

Rape as an Instrument of War and Genocide: Liberia and Burma

Rape, in all areas of the world, has become a powerful way to control and inflict fear upon people. Professor Amy Hudnall will open the evening with background information on rape in the context of war and genocide connecting to the important information that Sherouk Ahmed will present on the little known conflict that has slowly become genocide over the past decades against the Rohingya in Burma (Myanmar), followed by the screening of the documentary "Pray the Devil Back to Hell" that shares the story of Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Leymah Gbowee, and her experience of bringing peace to war torn Liberia.
